Expanded Course Description
In this seminar, students take a deep dive into the weird world of witches, demonology, and the prosecution of crime in the era of judicial torture in Europe from the late Middle Ages until their decline in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Students will into the formation of “learned stereotype” of the witch; the use of evidence to prosecute “black magic”; the gendering of witches; and the social drama of witchcraft prosecutions. Research papers will focus on a single trial, demonological tract, or historiographical debate concerning the witch hunts of early modern Europe. Applies towards the Europe area field as well as the 407 and pre-1800 requirements
