Expanded Course Description
J410/510 (1-4 cr) is a required orientation class for the Media in Ghana summer excursion. We cover program logistics, including financial aid, flights, visa requirements, health considerations, expectations for the summer on-site program, and program assignments. Additionally, you will be divided into two- or three-person teams to prepare short presentations on Ghana and Media in Ghana. Readings and short reaction papers will be required. Course learning outcomes as follows: • Know basic African colonial and post-colonial history, and how historic context has shaped Africa’s political, economic and cultural realities today, including African media. • Understand shared Ghanaian and North American historical events related to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, and Ghana’s independence movement. Understand that role of journalists such as W.E.B DuBois factor importantly. • Understand the history and evolution of Ghana’s media, and current/ongoing challenges facing Ghanaian media organizations. • Prepare for the summer trip.
