Expanded Course Description

This studio technique course is crafted to further develop the skills of advanced level students in the art form known as modern or contemporary concert dance. The course emphasizes both technical and expressive aspects of the discipline, aiming to refine students' stability, mobility, soft vertical alignment, and fluidity of spinal articulation. Students will cultivate a deep awareness of their "center," facilitating greater ease in off-centered movement and efficient body usage, leading to enhanced ease of motion. In addition to technical mastery, students will work on rhythmic accuracy and sophisticated aspects of musicality. They will expand their dynamic range and expressivity, grow in individual agency of movement, and develop amplitude in movement. The course incorporates reflective writing based on readings and viewings from the contemporary dance repertoire, aiming to produce a more informed dancer who can critically engage with the dance form.
