Expanded Course Description
Introduces students to comparative literature as an interdisciplinary mode of study, where traditional literary critical analysis of culture is integrated with media-specific analysis of film and video. In general, the field of comparative literature takes a comparative approach to national traditions, exploring diverse cultural forms within a global framework. In COLT 232 that global framework also includes methods and research drawn from other academic disciplines: namely, cinema studies, journalism and communications, media aesthetics and related fields. Such interdisciplinary study is fundamental to comparative literature as a discipline, helps prepare students for a global and multifaceted world, and provides a viewpoint increasingly central to the humanities in general. Accordingly COLT 232 meets the general education requirement in Arts and Letters as well as the multicultural requirement in International Cultures.
