Expanded Course Description
In this course students will build a website analyzing a place of their choosing. Options include a city, forest lands, agricultural lands, a transportation corridor, a national border, or any other place that has been extensively mapped. Students will use Professor Howell's beta software, "Mapping Power," to build their sites. In the process, they will contribute to the testing and refining of a new digital platform. Students will learn basic skills in GIS and MapBox, and will learn best practices in the new field of Digital Humanities and the growing field of Public History. They will also learn the basics of spatial history, and how to conduct research in digital and brick-and-mortar archives. The "Mapping Power" platform is designed to be user friendly for researchers with basic computing and GIS skills (which will be taught in the course). However, the platform will also accommodate students with advanced GIS skills who wish to experiment with polygons and other methods of performing geospatial data analytics.
