Expanded Course Description
Our social world is composed of complex and pervasive systems of social control – both informal norms and formal rules and laws. Yet people routinely violate or challenge these norms and rules, and sometimes our collective understanding of certain practices shift from deviant into the realm of normal and acceptable. This course focuses on how behaviors or attributes are defined as deviant, the social consequences of deviant behaviors, and theories of deviance and social control. We will learn about some of the obstacles of studying deviant and criminal behavior, how deviance is central to individual identities, and how people enter and exit deviant practices. |
