Expanded Course Description
Jesus is one of the seminal figures in Western tradition. His life and teachings are the basis of one of the world?s major religions, and the inspiration of much of the culture, art and literature in the Western world. But for all his impact, Jesus himself remains a notoriously shadowy figure. This Jewish peasant from a small village in Galilee left no writings or any direct traces, and apart from the writings of his followers, there is very little information about him.
The course explores the evidence for the life of Jesus through the records about him by his followers. The first half of the term focuses on methods for analyzing early Christian texts for historical reconstruction: establishing the earliest texts, clarifying literary relationships among the texts, identifying forms of oral communication, evaluating the various perspectives of the authors of the gospels in their selection and editing of traditions about Jesus, and tracing the development of various traditions. In the latter half of the term we apply these methods to key topics in the Jesus tradition such as his deeds of healing, his teachings, his ethics, and his crucifixion.
It is an exciting study in close textual analysis and historical reconstruction. The course also highlights the diversity of early traditions about Jesus, and thus students will receive a strong introduction to not just the Gospels, but to broader issues of dissent and tolerance, and how these factors affect the development of ideas and world-views.
REL 317 may be taken as a sequence with REL 316, or each may be taken individually.
