Expanded Course Description
This course is the first in a series introducing general physics, and covers the major principles of classical and modern physics. The course introduces problem solving skills, taught in compulsory tutorials that supplement the lectures. Students work together in small groups to solve problems related to the week's homework assignment. An associated laboratory, PHYS 204, is available, though not required.

PHYS 201 introduces the physics of classical dynamics. Based on Newton's three laws of mechanics, the variables required to describe motion - displacement, velocity and acceleration - are related to the variables that quantify the cause of motion force and momentum. The relationship between energy and motion is also presented. Static objects, motion under gravity and circular motion are all considered. The dynamics of fluids (gases and liquids) are also presented.
