Expanded Course Description
This seminar is the core course in the Wayne Morse Scholars program. Our focus will be on important democratic dilemmas in American politics at the national, state, and local levels. "Politics is a world of limits and alternatives," as political scientist Gerald Pomper aptly noted. "Everyone in politics – from voters to presidents – must choose." This seminar trains a spotlight on these tough political and policy choices. That is, we will center this seminar on a variety of significant dilemmas confronting our representative democracy, and on the decisions made by diverse actors in varied contexts as they respond to these challenges. The course begins with an exploration of different ways of thinking about justice and modern democratic dilemmas, including utilitarian, libertarian, Rawlsian, and communitarian perspectives. We then dig into a range of compelling democratic challenges that present important democratic choices, including security versus liberty in counter-terrorism policy, the politics of immigration reform, major elections and presidential leadership, abortion and gender in the law, rival traditions in U.S. foreign policy, urban policy and politics, same-sex marriage and adoption, and environmental politics. This seminar will feature a blend of in-depth discussions, simulations, hands-on exercises, debates, occasional guests, and group presentations. Strong preparation before class (such as completing the assigned readings on time) and a willingness to participate in cooperative learning will be key. We also will have a trip to Portland for an up-close view of urban policy and politics, and group projects presented in the last week on a significant democratic dilemma. Given your proven ability, you should find the demands of this course to be both manageable and satisfying.
