Expanded Course Description
Data sonification uses sound to reveal new insights about data, insights that may be missed using data visualizations and other graphic representations of data. In practice, sonfication is “the mapping from data to one or more parameters of an audio signal or sound synthesis model for the purpose of better understanding, communicating or reasoning about the original model, experiment or system” (Scaletti 2018). The course explores audio applications for discovery and research and covers key research areas in the interdisciplinary fields of sonification and auditory display. Students will develop sonification projects, mapping data into sound in order to reveal information and generate insight. This course focuses on understanding and practicing sonification as a line of research. Students will study question development, data preparation, sound mapping strategies, and apply their study to data sonification projects. The active design process will help prepare students for a variety of sonification applications, including interdisciplinary collaboration and consulting.
