This class uses a human rights paradigm to examine issues facing people with disabilities throughout the world. Readings and discussions will emphasize cross-disability and cross-cultural approaches to gender and disability, international development and disability, inclusive educational models, and cross-cultural aspects of disability.

Expanded Course Description

Through class readings and discussions, students will use a human rights paradigm to examine issues facing people with disabilities throughout the world. Topics covered will include gender, disability and development; inclusive development and humanitarian assistance; universal design; legal approaches to disability rights and implementing disability rights laws and policies globally; and, leadership in global disability rights movements. Students will have the opportunity to apply theory in a case study focused on a country of their choice, thus complementing their knowledge of global approaches with an understanding of how they are applied in local conditions and contexts. This course is relevant for students across a wide range of disciplines, including global studies, special education, women's and gender studies, law, ethnic studies, sociology, psychology, human rights, social movements and architecture and design.
