Expanded Course Description

This course serves as an introduction to pre-modern Italian culture through the lens of “firsts:” of Italy’s foundations and contributions to literature, the arts, philosophy, political science, and women’s writing. It focuses both on exceptional authors (e.g., Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Machiavelli) and representative figures of the first centuries of Italian literature. Texts are read in modern Italian (with facing-page original texts where possible), both to illuminate both the periods in question and to hone students' ability to read and discuss literary and historical texts in a foreign language. This course also focuses on Italian language skills and critical thinking: reading, vocabulary, verb tenses, writing short essays, and techniques of textual analysis. Prerequisite: Two years of college Italian or equivalent. All reading, discussion, writing and exercises are in modern Italian.
