Expanded Course Description

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are internationally recognized milestones guiding global advancement toward sustainability. An important pathway to achieve SDGs is by creating Sustainable Cities and Landscapes (SCL). This course introduces the concept of SCL and examines the practices that have been employed to create SCLs. Adopting a SCL framework for comprehensive assessment of those practices in various aspects of urban development, this course covers a wide range of topics and issues, including understanding vulnerable communities in the face of climate change, transformative approach to water and energy, cities for biodiversity, placemaking for communities’ social and physical wellbeing, and regional governance for rural-urban co-development. This is a hybrid-teaching course that employs online (asynchronous) and in-person teaching modalities. It uses various pedagogical methods, such as case teaching method, peer-learning, and open pedagogy, to help students gain knowledge and acquire analytical skills. The course encourages and challenges students to conduct critical self-evaluation of their capacities in the six core areas of sustainability competencies, including 1) systems thinking, 2) future evaluation and anticipation, 3) critical thinking-based norms and values, 4) strategic action-taking, 5) collaboration and mutual learning, and 6) integrated problem-solving.
