Expanded Course Description
KRN 302 - Builds upon the skills and knowledge developed in KOR 301 and further develops the students¿ proficiency in producing and comprehending the Korean language. Additionally, there is a focus on more in-depth analysis of Korean cultural and literary texts, as well as an introduction to aspects of Korean history. Through the use and analysis of cultural materials, students will deepen their understanding of Korean culture and history. The materials will also provide an opportunity to reinforce and review grammatical and lexical aspects of Korean. Another focus of the course is on the development of writing and the acquisition of the written register and its points of difference with the oral register. Students are asked to produce essays on both cultural and personal topics. Class discussions addressing the cultural and literary material further develop the students¿ ability to communicate in Korean on a variety of topics.

This course will create meaningful opportunities for students to engage actively in cultural and textual analysis through the language and cultural material presented as part of the curriculum. Proposed courses are broad in scope and liberal in nature in that Korean language and culture will be approached through a variety of methods and world outlooks. For example, linguistic, cultural, textual, historical and geographical materials will be introduced, discussed, and analyzed. Students will be encouraged to view topics discussed through non-US perspectives, such as those of North and South Korea and East Asia generally. The multiplicity of perspectives within these regions will also be highlighted.
