Introduces students to a number of common research practices in the field of applied linguistics, including research design, ethics, and collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data. Students will gain hands-on experience with analysis software to assist their research.

Expanded Course Description
This course is designed to introduce students to a number of common research practices in the field of applied linguistics. Importantly, students will learn to be discerning consumers and producers of research knowledge in the field. General research practices will be introduced, including research design and ethics. Further, students will be provided hands-on experience in collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data. In the area of quantitative research methods, independent and dependent difference tests (i.e., t-tests and ANOVA) and correlational approaches (correlation and regression) will be introduced. In the area of qualitative research methods, ethnography, case study, and narrative inquiry approaches will be introduced. Students will be given opportunities to critically appraise research in the field and to create their own research proposal.
