Expanded Course Description
This course examines the role of mass media in shaping politics, policy, and political behavior in the United States. Through a blend of theoretical frameworks and case studies, we will explore how media shapes public perception, influences policy decisions, and impacts democratic processes. We will engage with scholarly readings and analyze various media forms—including news articles, social media, and political messaging—to understand the complex relationships between news outlets, journalists, politicians, government officials, and the public. Key topics include the constitutional foundations and structure of the U.S. media landscape, the evolution of news media, media effects on political knowledge and attitudes, the role of social media in contemporary politics, media bias and misinformation, and the strategic use of media by political actors and institutions. |
