Expanded Course Description
PORT 305 Cultura e lingua: Brasil ontem e hoje ("Brazil yesterday and today") is an interdisciplinary introduction to Brazilian history and culture. Students will learn about the geography and regional differences in Brazil, one of the largest and most diverse countries in the Americas. The course will explore the history and demographics of the various groups that contribute to the current-day mosaic of Brazil: indigenous, European (Portuguese, Spanish, German, Italian, Middle Eastern), Asian (Japanese), and African. Students will study contemporary issues in politics through the lens of tensions between authoritarianism and democratization, migration and urbanization, and the interplay of racial and ethnic identities. The role of women in Brazilian society will receive special attention. Each iteration of the course may include other unique cultural and historical experiences that shape modern-day Brazil. All coursework conducted in Portuguese.
