Expanded Course Description
This course is about the law governing use of the death penalty in the United States, focusing primarily on decisions of the United States Supreme Court. We will examine the law in the context of our criminal justice system. The course covers (among other things), the history of the death penalty, the arguments against and in favor of the death penalty, social science research on the death penalty, and, of course, the significant body of law that governs the use of the death penalty. During the term, students will develop legal skills such as how to read statutes and judicial opinions, including Supreme Court opinions. Students will also gain insight into significant contemporary criminal justice debates around the death penalty.
