Expanded Course Description
“You better werk!” is a well-known command that was popularized by RuPaul’s song “Supermodel” in 1993. More than a call to “werk” or to be fierce, the command speaks to how identities are performed on stage and in everyday life. This course introduces students to the question of how gender and racial identities are performed and how those performances impacts shifting assumptions about race, gender, sexuality, and national belonging. We will investigate various sites of performance, such as films, television, visual art, and social media to consider the political and personal consequences of performance.
Topics covered include: cultural appropriation, drag performance, sexual desires, and queer utopias.
