Expanded Course Description
California has always loomed large in the nation’s political economy and cultural imagination. And from the dawn of the Gold Rush to the rise of Silicon Valley, the specter of inequality has haunted the promise of triumph in the Golden State. This course considers narratives of utopia and dystopia through a wide range of music, film and other cultural texts produced about the state, centered on themes of migration, violence, racial identity, production and consumption. It pays close attention to an array of musical forms and traditions—from blues to Banda, country to K‐Pop, and bebop to hip hop—to consider the ways that success and failure, boom and bust, have been central to the cultural and political identity of the state. Guest speakers may include artists and activist organizations based in California working on issues of social and economic justice. |
