Expanded Course Description
The field of Arabic language and culture is defined by the ability to read, interpret, speak about, and contextualize “texts” (broadly construed as written, oral, and audio-visual). This, in turn, is accomplished through the twin goals of mastering the Arabic language and increasing knowledge of Arab cultural themes necessary to interrogate Arabic texts in an informed, relevant way. ARB 301, 302, 303 cover the skills required to complete these tasks by introducing students to key cultural and literary texts and assigning projects whereby they discourse about them. Basic communication skills are developed through the instruction and the assignments, and the multi-disciplinary materials addressed in the course convey the cultural competency needed by a student of Arabic culture and literature.
This course has several linguistic learning objectives. First, students will build on your progress in ARB 302 to improve in all four linguistic skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Your language of spoken discourse will continue to be Egyptian dialect. As in 302, we will use short videos and audio clips to continue your fluency and build your confidence in spoken discourse.
Over the past two terms, you have gained mastery over the morphological system, and familiarity with using the Hans Wehr dictionary, the single most important tool for the study of Modern Standard Arabic. This term, you will be applying this knowledge toward reading, listening, and watching Arab media news media, and discerning its meaning independently.
By the end of the course, you will move beyond familiarity with Wehr, and move to mastery at using the single most important lexical tool for Modern Standard Arabic.
The second half of ARB 303 will entail individual and group projects that utilize your developing skills. With your group, group, you will pick a topic (the conflict in Syria; climate change; public health; Israel/Palestine; sectarianism; music and the arts) that is frequently discussed in the news, and follow this topic in several news outlets. You will identify four or five print, audio, and visual exempla of this topic, and study them in conjunction with your group, and the instructor.
As part of this project, you will keep a group portfolio with the relevant articles, and each member of the group will keep a personal lexicon of words that he/she/they have looked up. Your will be graded on this lexicon, your portfolios, which will include several short writing assignments summarizing and analyzing the stories you find. You will finish the course with a final written and oral presentation on your topic. |
