Expanded Course Description
This intermediate-level sequence builds upon the foundation laid down in the first-year Japanese curriculum to help students acquire additional skill in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course materials used in second-year Japanese give students the language and cultural skills necessary to deal with a wide range of situations that arise in daily life (shopping, travel, renting an apartment, etc.). Particular emphasis is given to understanding the similarities and differences between Japanese and American culture. This includes gaining an awareness of the non-linguistic behavior of speakers of the Japanese language. Classroom activities include extensive role-playing, the presentation of skits, and other activities that aim at increasing the students' language and cultural competence.
