Expanded Course Description

This course is intended as an introductory discussion of central philosophical problems of globalization and justice and examines key conceptions in social and political philosophy as they relate to the broad topic of global justice.

Key philosophical problems include but are not limited to: issues in distributive justice pertaining to global poverty, inequality, justice matters concerning global human rights, issues concerning global identity and the politics of multiculturalism, issues in retributive justice concerning transnational criminal tribunals, issues in global environmental justice concerning exposure to environmental hazards, equity of access to resource, and livelihoods sovereignty, as well as thematic concerns including new global contexts of war, terrorism, environmentalism, and health care.

By considering a variety of approaches to understanding global justice, the course will cover a representative cross-section of key issues, philosophical perspectives, and modes of analysis used by philosophers working in the field with particular attention dedicated to the role of institutions (in the wider sense of norms, practices, and organizations) in the context of Global Justice issues. The course will consider alternative approaches to understanding the idea of justice in an international and cross-cultural context including recent developments in cosmopolitanism, nationalism, transnationalism and philosophical anthropology. The philosophical perspectives will be critically engaged in the context of a series of examples and in the analysis of case studies representing a range of issues related to global justice from diverse areas of the world (such as Global North and Global South) or stemming from marginalized communities and social groups outside of the US.
