Expanded Course Description
Note: ANTH 314 is NOT a prerequisite for 315. This class explores the expressive and artistic realms of women's and men's lives in cross-cultural perspective in relation to questions of strategy, power, and creativity. A critical perspective interrogates the history and political interests of anthropology and asks whether an egalitarian, emancipatory, inclusive, and feminist anthropology is possible. Topics include pollution beliefs, life-cycle events and rituals (menarche, marriage, childbirth, death), birth control/population planning, fertility beliefs, religion, healing, verbal arts, folk arts, and gender and human rights (via case studies of sexual trafficking, HIV/AIDS, and female genital mutilation). Case studies are drawn from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North and South America. Readings include ethnographies, autobiographies, journal articles, and newspaper articles. Guest lecturers and films supplement the class.
