Expanded Course Description
“Indigeneity, Place, and Cyberspace” will examine the relationships between Indigenous communities, land-based and virtual places, and technologies in the Digital Age. We will learn from Indigenous peoples and their media emerging from Indigenous nations and communities located in North America, the Pacific, Hawai’i, Australia, Aotearoa, and elsewhere. We will consider theories and practices of land and environmental justice that relate to data sovereignty, self-determination, decolonization, survivance, and environmental futurisms. Students will be introduced to Indigenous scholars and center them in their own course projects on contemporary Indigenous environmental issues. Some assignments will include moving beyond land acknowledgements, projects on Indigenous presence and leadership in cyberspace, developing presentations and reports on current case studies in environmental justice issues such as climate resilience and data justice, and participating in Indigenous listening circles with Tribal Citizens.
