Expanded Course Description
| In this class we will offer an introduction to the thought of contemporary Caribbean philosophers Sylvia Wynter (Jamaica) and Édouard Glissant (Martinique) and to Caribbean philosophy in general. We will focus on questions that center the history of the region as a special site of reflection regarding the construction of political systems that shape the entire world even today. In that vein, our class begins in the Caribbean but will extend to other places in the world. It begins too in the second half of the 20th century but will reach back into the past and forward into the future. While focusing on these two influential authors, we will adopt an interdisciplinary approach that challenges the practice of traditional philosophy and proposes and attunement to the fluidity of the experiences and histories of the peoples of the American continent. |
