Expanded Course Description
This course offers an examination of the theme of war, terrorism, and religion, focusing on religiously motivated acts of violence in the contemporary era through specific case studies. We will pay specific attention to the theories of sociologist of religion Mark Juergensmeyer, who seeks to demonstrate that violence in the name of religion has become a modern global phenomenon, performed by adherents of practically every religious tradition. The class thus will survey data ranging from abortion clinic bombings in the U.S. to nerve gas attacks on the Tokyo subways, as well as religiously motivated violence during wartime contexts in places such as Ireland, Israel, Bosnia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. After gaining a familiarity with a number of previous cases and Juergensmeyer's ideas about them, along with the theoretical perspectives of other prominent scholars of religion, the course will evaluate the merits of applying diverse theories to particular cases such as: war and genocide in Bosnia, and the 9/11 terror attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon.
