Lectures will be thematic and will cover major stylistic movements, such as rococo, chinoiserie, genre painting, neoclassicism, and the beginnings of romanticism. Topics will include transformations in portraiture and landscape aesthetics, caricature and print culture, the education of artists in academies and abroad, exhibition culture and the birth of the museum, and artistic responses to the industrial and political revolutions, colonialism and empire, and science and technology.
