Expanded Course Description
The course explores European art of the Enlightenment. Lectures will be thematic and will cover major stylistic movements, such as rococo, chinoiserie, genre painting, neoclassicism, and the beginnings of romanticism. Topics will include transformations in portraiture and landscape aesthetics, caricature and print culture, the education of artists in academies and abroad, exhibition culture and the birth of the museum, and artistic responses to the industrial and political revolutions, colonialism and empire, and science and technology. Topics will be considered in the context of major shifts in thought in response to social and political upheaval, growing secularism and emphasis on reason and individualism, and the dawn of globalization.
