Expanded Course Description
This course examines sports through the lens of race, class, and gender in US History from 1865 to the present. We will study the 19th century connections between sport and American imperialism, Indigenous issues in sport and society, faith and conservativism in the Cold war, athletics in the history of the Black Liberation Struggle, and Title IX’s impact on American universities. Our final unit is dedicated to sports at the University of Oregon and case studies of your choosing, allowing us to trace the legacies and implications of our main topics in examples of special interest.
