Expanded Course Description
This course uses a broad contemporary and historical survey of Russian politics to teach students about social science thinking. Its core structure is to allow students to study three different political systems across recent Russian history (the Socialist/Communist state, Attempted Democracy and the Semi-authoritarian
state) as examples of how different political “rules of the game” can shape people's lives.
In order to understand change in Russian politics we must investigate numerous subjects, including a number of policy areas that require a fundamental understanding of Soviet and Russian political institutions, processes, political culture, and history. Although we shall of necessity look at topics dealing with Soviet and Russian society, history, and economics, this is above all a political science course; the approach and questions we shall ask reflect that disciplinary perspective. More specifically, we will focus on how political decisions are made, power is exerted, political institutions are formed and transformed, economic and political goals interact and multiple others. |
