Expanded Course Description
This class explores the role of culture in the definition and maintenance of mental health and 'mental illness.' We will be exploring what our culture and various cultures of the world have to say about mental health, mental illness, and treatment of mental illness. We will be addressing questions like the following: What is a mental illness? Do different cultures define it differently? What is meant by culture, anyway? Are there different kinds of mental illness in different cultures of the world? Does depression look different in China than it does here? Does Schizophrenia occur all over the world? How do different cultures approach the healing of mental illness? In answering these questions, we will be examining our Western ideas about mental health and mental illness in the light of various traditions around the world including shamanism, Buddhism, and Native traditions. By the end of the course, students should have a good idea of how our culture shapes our ideas of mental health, and to some extent determines it. Emphasis is put on writing essays based on readings. For example, students may write on a topic about how culture contributes to eating disorders. The final project is to design an educational activity for someone working in a mental health clinic who is not aware of the huge role that culture can play in mental health.
