Expanded Course Description
This course provides a critical/cultural overview of the sporting cultures within the state of Oregon. In
doing so, it asks students to explore the relationship between sport and larger social and capitalist
frameworks. This is illustrated through a variety of written and visual texts and further explored through
relevant assignments that allow for students’ articulation of course concepts and incorporation of primary
source analysis.
In this course, students will:
• Interrogate moments of pleasure, protest, and power in sport
• Analyze how racialized and gendered bodies are read through entertainment, politics, and theory
• Produce a multimedia project which delves into historical or contemporary issues in sport
