Expanded Course Description
This year-long sequence is taught in a seminar format that depends primarily on class discussions focused on close reading. Complex characterization and the complex emotional states dramatized in prose and verse are presented as reflections of intricate societies and unique individuals. Students learn to debate the ambiguities of literary expression, and write about varied and sophisticated literary forms. These courses are writing intensive. A series of papers assigned over the course of the year teach students how to address various aspects of literary history and literary criticism. Writing assignments and guided discussions are designed to give students a strong sense of argument as well as ways of analyzing artistic form and expression. Students learn how to express and exchange ideas in both discussion and writing, alert to the functions of editors, translators, and literary critics. HC 221H focuses on ancient and medieval literature and considers epic, drama, and lyric verse. HC 222H considers the Renaissance (Early Modern period), the Enlightenment, and early Romanticism and treats literary developments in genre, voice, and language. HC 223H presents literature of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, and includes the assignment of a longer research paper, allowing students to follow subjects of particular interest while drawing in a variety of outside critical views. Each term Clark Honors College offers six or seven sections of the appropriate sequence course. From three to five professors will be teaching the sequence each term, and each puts together an individual course. Each section of the sequence will thus be accented by each professor¿s specialty and interests.
