Expanded Course Description
| This course examines the development, transformation and inheritance of structures of racial domination and resistance in the United States. Readings, lectures and exercises are designed both to familiarize students with the history and contemporary impact of these structures and to explore the complex relationship between race, political action, and democracy. Course subjects include policy, legal and theoretical debates around immigration, incarceration, language policy, affirmative action, and housing.
This course satisfies the Social Science group requirement in that it spans a wide range of issues, perspectives and forms of analysis rooted in contemporary scholarly research. It examines legal cases and policy debates from the late 19th century to the present, incorporating different critical theoretical traditions, including critical race studies, political discourse analysis, whiteness, and theories of intersectionality. The course is organized around student comprehension of central concepts within the academic literature, rather than the more applied skills of interpreting case law or deciphering public policy debates. |
