Expanded Course Description
| ENG 395 is the second in a two-part chronological, upper division survey of modern literature from America, Britain, and Europe. The course incorporates works of prose, poetry, and drama, and attends closely to philosophical, political, and cultural events that run parallel to developments in 20th century literary history. ENG 395 covers the period from 1945 to 2000. There are no prerequisites are required, but students should be prepared for advanced university-level work in literary studies. Although readings in the course focus on a relatively narrow period, ENG 395 addresses issues, movements, and intellectual trends (Freudianism, Marxism, Fascism, Existentialism, for example) that are central to 20th century intellectual history more generally. As part of a broad survey of major European, British, and American literature, ENG 395 satisfies the university's Group Requirement in the Arts and Letters category. The courses on twentieth century literature, ENG 394 and 395, may be taken as a sequence or individually. |
