Expanded Course Description
ENG 301 is one in a three-course series that offers students beginning the English major and those seriously considering it an introduction to the discipline of English as it is practiced at the University of Oregon. Team-taught by three professors in a lecture/discussion format, the ENG 301-2-3 series provides a common intellectual experience for majors and a foundation for future studies in English, American, and Anglophone literatures, media, and folklore. ENG 301 is divided into three parts, each of which focuses on reading "texts" in the broad sense (including various media texts) within their cultural and historical contexts and using comparative methodologies to appreciate how cultural, historical, biographical, and archival concerns frame the way we understand a text. Works may include, for instance, medieval poetry such as Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Victorian novels, and radio dramas, such Orson Welles's War of the Worlds. Writing assignments typically comprise exercises involving preliminary research into a relevant historical or cultural context for a chosen primary text and interpretive essays that explore how that context is specifically reflected and "taken up" in a given text.
