Expanded Course Description
This topics course examines the cultural practice of sport and its relation to constructions of race and gender. By engaging with a range of media—including fictional films, documentaries, journalistic and academic articles, literary fiction, and comics—students will explore how sports have functioned as symbols and sites of social control and as occasions for political resistance and cultural expression. In order to creatively interrogate the interplay between sports, race, and gender, students will practice writing journalistic articles and literary accounts, and engage in research projects devoted to critically interpreting the roles of athletes, architecture, business, and media industries in shaping the meanings of race and gender both on and off the field. ES 310 is repeatable four times for a maximum of 20 credits when the topic changes.
