Expanded Course Description
ENG 340 is an upper-division survey of the forms and varieties of fiction, poetry, and drama by Jewish writers from the 19th century to the present. There are no prerequisites for the course, but students should be capable of advanced university-level work in literary studies. Although readings in ENG 340 focus on a specific cultural tradition, the course will challenge students to locate their analyses of literary texts within a broad and demanding philosophical, theological, and political context. As a concentrated survey of major works of fiction, drama, and poetry, ENG 340 satisfies both the University Multicultural Requirement in the category of International Cultures and the Group Requirement in the Arts and Letters category.
