Expanded Course Description
This course explores issues of power, representation, and cultural memory through a focus on ephemeral food television, which we will approach with a combination of transgender media theory and queer TV studies. Examining various genres of food TV, as well as the use of food in a broad range of television programming, we will study the long history and recent proliferation of reality TV while emphasizing the agency of LGBTQ+ celebrity cheftestants of color. Through attention to the competition mode of entertainment and ways of working within and challenging commercial media, this course delves into the poetics of post-network identity politics, digital streaming and time-shifted consumption, and queer trans approaches to tapping into and generating camp contexts for analyzing media industrial systems and more.
