Expanded Course Description
This course is part of a three-course experience led by Emina Buzinkic and Will Johnson based virtually in Zagreb, Croatia. This course and INTL: Peace Studies in the Balkans will be taught remotely. A third optional course will feature travel to the Balkans for 2 weeks in September. If you are interested in participating in the course that will travel to the Balkans, please contact GEO for more information.
The Human Rights & Humanitarian Intervention course will introduce students to the basic framework for the understanding of international human rights law in both its domestic and geopolitical perspectives. The conflict in the former Yugoslavia represents an excellent case study for the disconnect between aspirational human rights law and actual attempts at humanitarian intervention during civil or regional war. As a part of the course, there will be a series of international guest lectures from NGOs in Croatia. Virtual excursions to local museums, courthouses, and NGOs with the faculty will be included. Students will also be able to interact with a panel of locals to discuss international human rights perspectives in the Balkans.
