Expanded Course Description
ARAB 331, Reading Classical Arabic, trains students in the mode of inquiry that has long defined the study of classical Arabic and Islamic texts: classical Arabic philology. Students will learn how to use the basic tools for research of classical Arabic studies: lexicons (medieval and modern), classical grammars, medieval biographical dictionaries and geographies, and scholarly encyclopedias. Students will apply these sources and skills in reading and analyzing selected classical Arabic texts, which will introduce them to the major issues of the field. More broadly, students will learn complexities of interpreting texts as windows onto intellectual culture.
