Expanded Course Description
| Since popular culture is a broad and ever-transforming subject matter, the precise content of this course might change from quarter to quarter. The major issues, however, are constant: What is the relationship between popular culture and ¿high¿ culture in China? How much regional variety does one see in Chinese popular culture? How does Western popular culture, particularly of the American variety, impact Chinese popular culture? How does the world of popular culture reflect the issues, concerns, and anxieties of modern China. This class explores a wide range of subjects and media, extending from popular religious practices to art, film, and the web. Students are encouraged to examine critically a world which may seem on the surface to be superficial but often carries meanings and significance that open up a broad understanding of cultural diversity. |
