Expanded Course Description
This course uses the mosaic of languages in East Asia as a way to explore a variety of cultural and social phenomena. The structure of the three major East Asian languages of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese and the systems of writing they each employ are in many ways different, and yet they have influenced one another in significant and interesting ways that reveal the deep cultural and political interaction of these three cultural areas. In addition to studying the way such things as politeness are encoded in each of these languages, this course examines the way minority speakers of these languages (e.g., Koreans in Japan, Koreans in China, etc.) interact with the majority that surrounds them. Students will come from this class with a much more accurate understanding of the relationships between language, culture, and political power.
