Expanded Course Description
JPN 315, Introduction to Japanese Linguistics, surveys the field of Japanese linguistics, concentrating on the description and analysis of various aspects of Japanese that inform our understanding of the workings of the language. Although this course focuses on Japanese, the course content—the methods of description and analysis of the language that will be taught—will be clearly situated within the broader context of the discipline of linguistics. Typological references to and comparisons with other languages (e.g. English) will be made whenever useful. The main topics of this course cover the major sub-domains of linguistics, namely, phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and pragmatics. This course fulfills the Arts and Letters group requirement.
