Expanded Course Description
Despite an increasing uniformity of culture due to globalization China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam have preserved and today actively revitalize social structures and local practices that are firmly linked to values cherished since the ancient past. This course gives a chronological and topical overview of philosophical, religious, and social traditions that form the roots of these values and today are part of the respective national identity. Topics that will be addressed are Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism and other indigenous religions, concepts of family and gender, the roles of the literati class and the samurai. While the course concentrates on the developments in China and Japan, we will also examine the adaptation of the value systems in Korea and Vietnam. |
