Expanded Course Description
This class is designed as a survey course, exploring the film industry of various regions of Latin America (North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean). We will analyze the political economy of the film industry along with the socio-political and cultural conditions that facilitated its development and the production of movies. We will also examine films as artistic undertakings (formal qualities and styles) and sociological documents that provide a window into the socio-historical context of each region in question. The course will expose students to classic and contemporary films, including Mexican and Argentinean Golden Age cinema, cinema movements like Brazilian Cinema Novo and Tropicalismo, the militant film era of the 1960s through 1980s, and films created for global distribution since the 1980s to the present.
