Expanded Course Description
| This is a sequence of courses especially designed for prospective elementary and middle school teachers. Mathematical reasoning proof and full understanding of the concepts is emphasized.
Text: "A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers", Billstein, Libeskind and Lott
Very basic number theory: divisibility in base ten with proofs. Primes and composite numbers. A test for primeness and Euclid's proof of the infinitude of primes. Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) and Least Common Multiple (LCM) their use, properties and the Euclidean Algorithm. Product of LCM and GCD. Clock and Modular arithmetic.
The set of rational numbers. Operations on rational numbers as fractions and their justifications. Proportional reasoning. Word problems. Operations on decimals. Non-terminating decimals. Percent and compound interest. Real numbers. Probability. Multistage experiments. Odds and conditional probability. Permutations and combinations. Introduction to Statistics. Variance and standard deviation.
