Expanded Course Description
Between 1700 and 1900, mathematicians created a body of work that gave very precise, rigorous meaning to the basic concepts of calculus: concepts such as continuity, limit, and many others. This subject is called analysis, and it is the backbone for a huge portion of modern mathematics. MATH 316-317 will be an introduction to its fundamentals. MATH 316 will begin with the basics: natural numbers, rational number, and real numbers. It will then give a rigorous treatment of limits and continuity. MATH 317 will continue the development, giving rigorous treatments of power series, differentiation, integration, as well as exponentiation and logarithms.
