Expanded Course Description
ENG 230 surveys four centuries of writing, in both British and American traditions, that represents human relations to the natural world. Reading classic as well as little-known works in the major genres of poetry, non-fiction, and fiction, the course focuses particularly on how writers have appropriated pastoral literary forms and themes to suit their own cultural perspectives and literary purposes. Required texts may vary from term to term. ENG 230 is an interdisciplinary course that will introduce students to a major motif in literary studies and provide them with a solid foundation in the field of Environmental Studies. Analytical and descriptive writing assignments will challenge students to develop their critical and expressive skills, while quizzes and in-class exams measure the depth and extent of their engagement with the course reading. ENG 230 satisfies the university's Group Requirement in the Arts and Letters Category. |
