Expanded Course Description
ENG 303 is one in a three-course series that offers students beginning the English major and those seriously considering it an introduction to the discipline of English as it is practiced at the University of Oregon. Team-taught by three professors in a lecture/discussion format, the ENG 303-4-5 series provides a common intellectual experience for majors and a foundation for future studies in English, American, and Anglophone literatures, media, and folklore. While, like other courses in the sequence, ENG 303 is divided into three parts corresponding to different historical periods, this writing-intensive course focuses particularly on developing close reading skills to explore the question, "What is a text?" in depth across history, media, and forms. Writing assignments typically combine two elements: an exercise in close reading, in which students demonstrate their ability to identify and interpret textual features of form and technique, and an interpretive essay, in which they demonstrate that understanding in a convincing argument informed by insightful close reading.
